This Brandon Cotton 6'0" PG out of Michigan State and most recently D-League looked pretty impressive especially considering he arrived in VT less then 24 hours before this game. I hope we keep him.
Barre, VT - The Vermont Frost Heaves and Quebec Kebs kicked off the 2010 Champlain Cup series in Barre this afternoon and the Frost Heaves garnered a hard fought 110-107 victory. With the unique point system for the Champlain Cup, winning a quarter gets that team 1 point, winning the half gets that team 2 points and with any ties, each team gets a ½ point.
With today's game Vermont earned 4 ½ points and the Kebs earned 2 ½ points.
Vermont was led in scoring by newcomer Brandon Cotton who arrived on Saturday with 30 points,
5 rebounds followed by Brandon Ball with 23 points and 2 rebounds,.
D'Lancey Carter chipped in with 13 points and 7 boards and Troy Jackson added 12 points and 6 boards.
Quebec was led in scoring by Cordell Jeanty with 17 points.
Quebec will face the Manchester Millrats on Monday night in Barre at 7:05 in the second game of the series.
The Champlain Cupp will conclude on Tuesday night when the Frost Heaves and Millrats square off in their first encounter of the season.
Tickets for both games are available at First in Fitness in Montpelier and Allen Lumber in Barre.
Tickets will also be available at the door one hour prior to tipoff.

What number was Cotton? I was impressed with #12 and the defense he played. Ball had a good shooting game. I'd like to see a few less turnovers though.

BF1: Thanks for the incredible details. Its going to take me 3 months to just learn the player's names.
HOWEVER; This was the most incredible first-game EVER. I've been reading about the sorry state we are in because we've only been practicing for two weeks. I've been reading about poor planning. HA!
Jeff Strom wins the Will Voit award!!!! Will was a great coach. Will picked great players. Will delivered. However:
This team: Threw the ball AND caught the ball! Sounds simple eh? Pooh-pooh!!!! After gritting my teeth as player after pretty player in the PAST missed catches again and again, I can't emphasize enough that this team catches the ball!
This team Challenged and stole the ball! Now, we've been good at that in the past; We're good at this NOW; right from the start! = Congratulations Coach Strom!
We caught the ball; we challenged the and stole the ball; WE penetrated defenses; WE rebounded; We shot the ball!!!!!!!! BASIC Incredible Stuff!!! WOW!!!!! What a game! The best first game EVER!!!!
AND our player have Class; they're not ruffians; they say, "please" and "thank you"! I love 'em already.
So, Ian Mcarthy, (I know you are reading this.) WE'VE GOT A TEAM! They are learning to play together. They're great already. Lets see if you have taught any manners to your ...... @#$$^##@ (expletive deleted)
Sweeper: we missed you!!! Hope all is well. It's surely very good in Barre, VT.

I thought it was a decent game....not because of great play, but because the teams were evenly matched. To say the team is "great already" is a bit premature. Actually quite a bit premature.

OK, TR.
However, I didn't say "the team is great already"; I think I said, "They are learning to play together."
BUT: They caught the ball. And, they are not ruffians.
They are sooooooo much better than I expected.

The most exciting 1st game Ive ever been to has to be the 1st ever FH game. It had me hooked. Todays was OK but not the best by far. Crowd (what there was off) didnt get into it like in the past. Noticed alot of banners were missing off the walls.

Was a good game, definately fairly close in players abilities. We had a quite a few turnovers. The B & B show (Brandon Ball and Brandon Cotton) did an awesome job, as did the whole team. The crowd was much larger than I expected, but didn't get into it like crowds of the past. Nice to see some returning players on the Kebs. Cordell and Louis-Patrick. It is always nice to see some familiar faces.
I think the kebs played a good game. Lets see how they fair tonight against Manchester. We will also see a few returning players on their team, Charles Mason, Al Stewart, Marlow Currie and a few others.
the season has finally arrived.
GO HEAVES

Tonights game showed theres work yet to do, but it feels good to be back at the aud and watching the Frost Heaves mesh and hopefully become ,yet again, a team to be reckoned with. B. Ball rallying the troops.

There is definately alot of work to be done. The team didn't really play as a team tonight and it showed. The frustration was apparant. Why did Demasi sit on the bench so much. He was hot and making alot of shots and a majority of his free throws.
I noticed that we definately got out rebounded on both ends of the court. not even out rebounded, we just didn't rebound, period.
Positive notes: was a decent crowd, Brandon B was once again the leader and tried to rally the troops. Troy Jackson and Matt Hall also put in a gallant effort. Juan (sp) Bailey did a great job for just coming to us. Brandon Cotton showed great prowness.
Was hard to stay focused in the 4th quarter. Hopefully their is improvement before Sunday. We need to be a TEAM.
GO HEAVES.

We need to be a TEAM. GO HEAVES. I agree that there is a lot of work to be done but I think that we have a lot of raw talent. I also had the same question about why Demasi didn't play more. I also wasn't sure why he pulled Juwann Bailey after 1-2 minutes because he was impressive during this short amount of time he played with 2-3 blocks and the slamdunk show WOW. After thinking about this more after the game, I think that the coach wanted to play the marginal players to see them one more time before he has to make the final cuts. He needs his final roster by no later the 12/31 (PBL rules). He will need to cut 3-4 players. I also understand that another player arrived late yesterday or will arrive today.

Actually BS, you said...and I quote.... "They're great already."
But putting that aside, I will say the team did a better job playing the MillRats than the pre-season game a year or two ago. There is a definate advantage to keeping the same players together for more than one season. Halifax proved that, as well as the MillRats. And Quebec came real close to doing the same.
I am wondering why there is nearly as many guys in suits sitting on the bench as there are players? Maybe next year ditch a couple assistant coaches and hire one good scout?
It seemed like the "head" coach spends alot of time looking at his "what play to try next" list. The coach also looked very disgusted ( and seemed to voice it) if plays were broken up or not followed. I am sure he is trying different combinations, but I wonder if maybe he underestimated some of the talent in the PBL that we would be playing against.
Happy New Year

Coach Jeff enters an organization thats had great success and is asked in a two week period to look at 18 guys, prepare for arguably one of our biggest rivals the Millrats, all without three guys we have high hopes for that are out with injuries. He is a man of strong character and conviction .Im sure trimming the roster down to 12 will keep the coaching staff up late tonight. I personally like what I see. The team is up off the bench in unison cheering our guys and thats not something you teach. Having spent some time with the team now they truly are a group of good guys who have taken to each other already. With all road games coming in January and no return to Barre until February I think its very important to keep getting the word out about the Heaves. The old out of sight out of mind saying could apply here but for the future of the heaves we must stay on top of it. Tell your friends, neighbors and relatives about the heaves. When they come back to Barre we need to rock the house, pack the place. Heaves mania is contagious and we have to keep it fresh in peoples minds. Happy New Year to all.

We are lucky to have Strohm as coach. I think he is an excellent choice to lead the Heaves. However, at this point, I too am wondering why the team was pulled together so late and wondering why the "Organization" hasn't provided practice time. Good grief, 23 minutes of practice together as a team before the Champlain Cup..... sad, but true.
