Jam drop preseason finale to Bighorns - Nov 25, 2009 (by Eurobasket News)
The Bakersfield Jam were never able to get on track in their preseason swan song, as the Reno Bighorns jumped out to an early 20-3 lead and coasted to a 109-82 victory at the new Jam Events Center in Bakersfield.
The Bighorns did damage with a remarkably well-balanced attack. Though D-League veterans Desmon Farmer (6'5''-G-81, college: USC) and Rod Benson (6'10''-F/C-84, college: California) led Reno in scoring with 17 points apiece, every player on the team's roster scored at least six points and five different players had at least three assists. Benson, who shot an impressive 8-of-13 from the field, also led his team in rebounding with 14 and added a steal for good measure.
The Jam closed the gap to eight points on a couple of occasions in the second quarter but were never able to claw all the way back and could not get within single digits in the second half. They appeared to have chances, but missed a number of open jumpers on the way to shooting 32.2% field goal shooting for the game.
Jared Newson (6'5''-G/F-84, agency: Court Side, college: Tennessee-Martin) led Bakersfield with 17 points - including two highlight-reel dunks and 7-for-7 free throw shooting - but struggled with his shot as much as the rest of the team, finishing 5-for-15 from the field. On the bright side for the Jam, Akeem Wright (6'6''-G-84, agency: GOTathletes, college: Kansas St.) played very well off the bench, finishing with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in just 22 minutes. Stephen McDowell (5'11''-G-85, agency: Warren Sports International, college: S.Carolina) added 12 points, including two 3-pointers, also in relief duty.
Both teams will open the regular season on the road, as the Jam head to Albuquerque for a team Thanksgiving dinner and a Friday night matchup with the Thunderbirds. Reno will head to Idaho for a Saturday season opener against the Stampede.
