The Vermont Frost Heaves released part of their 2010-2011 schedule to the Times Argus on Wednesday, announcing they will host a preseason exhibition game against the Saint John Millrats on Sunday, Dec. 19 and open their Premier Basketball League season at home on January 7, 2011, against Oklahoma.
The entire schedule will be released at a later date by the league.
“We have a schedule, and it’s a good schedule,” Vermont general manager Don Mandelkorn said. “We had two goals in mind: To have a balanced schedule, not like last year where we were on the road for the month of January, and we wanted to play all our home games in central Vermont. We knew there might be some challenges in March (because of the high school tournaments held at the Barre Auditorium).
“We were able to achieve those goals. Every game will be at the Aud. There’s a good mixture of home and away, and we really like our schedule from a competition standpoint and a fan standpoint.”
The Frost Heaves will host the Millrats Dec. 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Aud.
Their league-opener against the Calvalry will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
Vermont will end the regular season at home on March 31 against the Rochester RazorSharks.
Two new teams have entered the league for the 2011 season: The Dayton (Ohio) Air Strikers and the Kentucky Blue Stallions. The Blue Stallions are based in Georgetown, Kent., where former Frost Heave Jared Carter is from.
The PBL consists of eight teams comprising two divisions.
Halifax, Vermont, Saint John (New Brunswick, Canada) and Quebec will make up one division and Kentucky, Dayton, Rochester and Oklahoma will make up the other.
“We’re feeling good about where we are right now,” Mandelkorn said.
Mandelkorn said the organization is continuing to grow financially and are meeting its obligations. The team will open season-ticket sales in the coming weeks.
